10 reasons why people buy personalised handmade gifts

Do you find buying gifts difficult? Buying gifts at any time of the year is hard as people have a tendency of buying things for themselves if they need or want something, I find Christmas the most difficult as it’s not just 1 person it’s everyone you buy for and I’m not the best for buying for men. I’m not and I do not mind admitting it. children though the list is endless of personalised things you can buy for them.

Here is my list top 10 reasons why people buy handmade.

  1. Its called personalised for a reason. it’s not only personal to you but to the maker as well. You have an input into it to, a journey where you and the maker discuss what you want. And the end result is a perfect unique gift. What’s not to love about that, and for me the gift is always so much better than any photo sent.

2) Do you have a name that you struggle to find in shops or have been shopping for a gift for someone else and you can not find it, so you come away disappointed and a gift you not completely happy with.. Then handmade is your answer. the only hard part is making sure you spell it correctly as once the process has started their is no refund. Any name spelling it any way you like. Perfect!

3) Family. When you buy handmade you more than likely buying from a small business, which means your helping them not only with their dreams but helping someone pay their bill, putting on on their little ones (as lets be honest we cloth our children way better than we cloth ourselves, Or is that just me)

4) It’s better for the environment, most handmade products do not require a factory or a large production facility, Instead, it’s more than likely from a craft shed, home office or even just a kitchen table. I’m lucky enough to have a home office though I’m growing out of it though. Oops. I either need a bigger house or convert playroom into the office as well. (I don’t think my partner will agree.

5) There’s a story behind each and every item sold, that’s unique and beautiful, and it’s your story and yours alone. Then there’s the maker’s story, Why that gem, why that colour, how it almost ending up in the bin, I could go on. So together you make a beautifully unique story. Like my School/pre-school box frame. the photo used was my own child on both his first day of school and pre-school.

6) Independent design makers and crafters are often on trend much quicker than large businesses and commercially produced gifts. As a small business, I can afford to experiment and make the one-off item to see whether they will gain interest, spot a trend and design a collection quickly that fits the trend perfectly.  To introduce a new product within a large commercial organisation can take easily 12 months, the small independent designer will be a lot more flexible than that. Also, there are so many great sites for handmade Esty, Amazon Handmade.

7) It can’t be simpler than this. You buy directly from the person who makes your handmade gift. If you need to ask any questions about the product (materials used to make it, how to look after it, colour & size options) you will talk directly with the person who made it. They know their product inside out and will be able to give you the best advice. When you place your order with Anance, the notification comes directly to the maker (me!!), and I will prepare your order – make the product, personalise, beautifully wrap it (yes, we creative people have a thing about pretty boxes and sparkly tissue paper…) and take it to the post office. Then post a selfie or 2, there may even be a post or 2 on social media about your gift.

8) Some prefer the quality of handmade goods to cheap, manufactured alternatives, and see buying handmade as a way  of quietly (or perhaps loudly) protesting mass produced goods. I’m a firm believer in helping out small businesses wherever I can.

9) You are NOT supporting a corporation that also happens to own a mining company, a chemical plant, and a few oil rigs. Helping child labour.

10) When you buy a handmade gift you know that the maker is passionate about their craft so each gift is made with love.  With handmade products, there’s always a lot of love, care & attention to detail to create something unique and to be treasured. And there’s also a little happy dance we do each and every time an order is placed.

So next time you need a gift, a new item for your home, or simply want to treat yourself to a piece of jewellery, please consider handmade.

You’ll get a better quality and unique product. You’re supporting a handmade business owner’s dream and craft. Plus, you’re keeping otherwise lost skills alive, and making a greener purchase.
